Daily Mail launches free London paper
"LONDON--Daily Mail & General Trust PLC unveiled plans to launch a free weekday morning newspaper early next year [1999], a move aimed at spoiling any similar efforts by competitors.
London Metro, a tabloid which will be free to commuters on the London Underground, will give summaries of city, national, international, business, arts and sports news, with television and events listings.
The publishing group acknowledged that the launch was designed to dissuade a new competitor in the London market, noting that such free-distribution dailies operate successfully in Stockholm and several Eastern European cities. DMGT publishes the Daily Mail and the London Evening Standard as well as 16 other dailies."
